The Harris Family Alternative Investments Program, the Private Equity & Venture Capital Club (PEVC Club) and Investment Management Club (IM Club) welcomed Robert Lewin, W’01, chief financial officer of KKR for a fireside chat.

On February 26, the Harris Family Alternative Investments Program, the Wharton Private Equity and Venture Capital Club (PEVC), and the Wharton Investment Management Club (IM) hosted an engaging fireside chat with Robert Lewin, CFO of KKR.
With a packed audience of over 100 students, Robert Lewin shared candid insights on navigating career pivots, the evolving role of leadership in finance, and how AI is reshaping – but not replacing – decision-making in private equity. He emphasized that successful careers are rarely linear and that the best opportunities often come from unexpected turns.
The conversation was moderated by Muhammad Vakil, vice president of the PEVC Club. Opening remarks were provided by Domenico Barbieri, CFO of the IM Club, and closing remarks were given by Kristy Baba, co-president of the IM Club.
“Rob’s fireside chat was a wonderful opportunity for students to hear firsthand what it truly takes to navigate a dynamic career in private equity. His journey—across multiple roles, from launching KKR’s Asia business to leading human capital—highlighted the importance of adaptability, empathy, and keeping an open mind. He emphasized that careers aren’t linear and that the best opportunities often come from unexpected pivots. His insights left a lasting impact, encouraging students to approach their careers with curiosity rather than rigid plans.”
– Muhammad Vakil, vice president of the PEVC Club

Key Takeaways from the Conversation
- Non-Linear Career Paths: Lewin reflected on his own journey: moving across private equity, credit, corporate development, and human capital. He encouraged students not to over-engineer their careers and to be open to opportunities.
- The Role of Empathy in Leadership: Lewin stressed that great leaders listen first – a practice he follows by hearing junior employees’ perspectives before sharing his own. He believes investing isn’t just about analysis; it’s about empowering people.
- AI & Private Equity: While AI is reshaping parts of finance, Lewin emphasized that human judgment remains irreplaceable in private equity. AI may enhance efficiency, but relationships and strategic decisions will always require human intuition.
- A Realistic View on Entering the Workforce: Lewin encouraged students to focus not just on technical skills but also on patience, adaptability, and navigating unexpected challenges. He reminded students that ambition is important, but taking time to reflect is equally critical for long-term success.
