The Harris Family Alternative Investments Program and the Wharton Undergrad Finance Club welcomed Paul J. Taubman, W’82, founder, chairman, and CEO of PJT Partners, for a conversation with Wharton students.

On December 5, 2025, the Harris Family Alternative Investments Program and the Wharton Undergrad Finance Club (WUFC) hosted a fireside chat with Paul J. Taubman, W’82, founder, chairman, and CEO of PJT Partners.
Taubman reflected to Wharton students on PJT Partners’ evolution over the past decade and the 30 years of experience that shaped it. Taubman shared his deliberate approach to recruiting new talent, the origin story behind PJT Partners, and what it means to lead with intention and vision in a fast-moving industry.
The conversation was moderated by Burcu Esmer, academic co-director of the Harris Family Alternative Investments Program.
“The most striking part of Paul’s journey to founding one of the largest firms in banking was that he once stood in our shoes. Hearing that he took the same classes we’re taking and stayed in the same dorms we live in now made us more reflective of the potential heights we could achieve,” offered Sorim Lee, W’28, VP of Events for the WUFC Club.

Key Takeaways from the Conversation
Growth with Intention and Purpose: Taubman shared how PJT Partners began with a small team of two, that eventually grew to over 1,000 employees. He emphasized that the firm’s success has been guided by a deliberate approach to growth, centered on hiring people who are driven and intellectually curious.
Experience Shapes Success: While PJT Partners is a young firm, Taubman noted that its foundation is built on three decades of prior experience. He spoke about how his tenure as Executive Vice President and Co-President of Institutional Securities at Morgan Stanley continues to inform PJT’s strategy, structure, and relationships.
The Power of a Name: Naming the firm “PJT Partners” was a considered decision, meant to signal that the organization is defined by all its people. Taubman highlighted how intentional branding can reinforce a shared sense of purpose.
